VHF radio signal; WX only?

On the (old) VHF radio on my boat, I seem to be only receiving the weather station, which comes in loud and clear. However, I don't hear anything else (except static) on any of the other channels, nor can I get a response when I attempt to transmit. Any suggestions on what might be the problem?

You have checked the "squelch" right?

Don't mean to insult but if you are unfamiliar with transceivers it can be overlooked. WX is usually so strong that the squelch setting is irrelevant and you will always receive.

Bad antenna or wiring connections

I have an old VHF that I use in my basement for weather reports. It does not have an antenna I just stuck a coat hanger in the connector spot. The WX channels are broadcast at a very strong signal and you almost don't need a channel. The regular channels are not like that.

Do you have an SWR meter ?

Do you know anyone who does and can borrow one. These devices will quickly tell you if you have an antenna or connection problem. Its very difficult to really see connection problems. An apparently good cable can be bad. Tom's correct, check with meter now

and you are also correct in adjusting squelch by just above static being "optimal". In my area I pick up regular broadcasts from CG, pilots, commercial, Navy and others on 16 frequently. You should be getting something pretty constant and anntennae is next probable culprit, handhelds are $100 and make nice back-up, I keep one in the cockpit, lot handier than going below to answer a hail & can turn it down to 1 watt for someone close.

Ted and Tom, thanks for the helpful tips.

I will keep you posted on what I find. Again, many thanks to you both.

Have checked the squelch

Ted, I have fiddled with the squelch. From what I remember of CB radios, the squelch should be adjusted just until the static stops, correct? Tom, maybe it does have something to do with the antenna connections. The radio connection is fine, so it could be in the connection at the base of the mast or (gulp) at the top. I'll check both.
