Recently purchased a Hunter 260. Intend to trailer a lot. Trying to decide between handheld and cabin mounted VHF. Seems to me stepping the mast and putting the windex in is hard enough without trying to figure how to install the antenna too. I know there will be a significat difference in range, but I use the radio primarily for communicating with dock master. What is the concensus?

I'd go with the full power cabin mount, & mast head antenna---

But, if you don't want to mess with a mast-head antenna use a rail mount or a fold down deck mount. One day you may need the radio for more then clearing into a harbor, it's all about safty. take care, Tom s/v GAIA

Fixed mount...

George, My X-wife and daughter live in Rapid City. Anyway, I would go to the fix unit. The handheld will eat batteries. Try a low (.25 or .35) amp draw vhf. On stand by you may use 1 amp hour of your battery every 3 hours or so. If you are going to trailer, Keep it simple with a rail or deck mounted antenna. Chances are you will not be sailing across the lake. 5 to 10 mile range should be more than you need. A 3 ohm antenna should do you nicely. Hope this helps, r.w.landau

I use a handheld

I don't disagree with either previous post. However, I have a Hunter 240 and trailer each time I sail. I use a handheld and have good results.
