Has anyone yet put a VHF radio on a 216? I was wondering about the type/location of the antenna. I don't know if the mast is hollow, which would allow running the coax down the inside of the mast, or if the mast is foam filled. If not a mast mounted antenna, it looks like the classic fiberglass boat antenna mounted on the gunwale near the stern is the only other practical location. Thoughts? Bob

I vote for the fiberglass unit

Your not going to be far from shore with 216 I hope. I would go with the 8'fiberglass. I put one on my 240 it works great It was a lot easier to do since the boats in the water. I only take my mast down once a year.

Handheld?

Have you considered going with a hand held unit. Thats what I use and it works great.

Handheld VHF vs mounted mobile unit

I really had preferred using a mounted mobile with a boat-mounted antenna as opposed to a handheld unit. My day job ( last 30 years) has been servicing handheld ( mostly Motorola) products. You get a lot more FUNCTIONAL bang for the buck with the mobile, if not as many " cutesie" bells and whistles. Not to mention the obvious advantage of the mounted antenna with 25 watts available when you REALLY need to be heard! Yeah, I know the downsides: Battery, keeping it charged, wiring, etc. Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer choice! Bob

For a Mounted Unit

I use a hand-held on my 216 as it has sufficient power for our sailing area. On my powerboat, I have a mounted unit installed using a 36" Shakespeare "Squatty Body" unit. You might look at putting one of these near the stern as opposed to a long fiberglass one. Mine works great on the powerboat. http://www.shakespeare-marine.com/antennas/specs/5215ant.htm
