Bob, Congratulations on your boat purchase. I've had a 76 h30 for the last 12 years. I too was faced with replacing the old yanmar engine. I was lucking in that I found a guy selling a new Vetus 23hp 3 cyl. that was he had purchased for a boat project that never happened. He had purchased the engine new 12 years ago and it was sitting in his garage wrapped in the shipping plastic all this time. The model was a m3.09 and at the time was still a current model. I bought it, ran it in the garage, changed out all the rubber hoses, water pump impeller, and installed it in the boat. It sat right on the existing engine rails and I didn't have to make any fiberglass modifications. I did have to shorten the prop shaft, but I needed a new one anyway. Also my old YSE12 was left hand rotation and I had to change the prop to a right hand one. I did all this with the boat in the water. Also the new engine was about 60 lbs lighter, a whole lot smoother, and I really like the extra power.

Thanks for the info

I am leaning in that direction, simply because of the cost and a full 2 year warranty, and the dealer tells me that the mounts on all vetus diesels are the same. Your installation seems to make that an even stronger choice. My concern at this point is the deal he offered is on a 16HP diesel, which would be a 33% increase over the old yanmar. He quoted me a price of $4600.00 for the 16 and that seems more than reasonable. I am negotiating for the old motor which according to the original prior owner still runs good. Do you think I ought to go higher in hp, I thik the next step is the 23 HP model, or do you think the 16 would be okay.

Two cyclinder

Bob, If I were buying a new motor, I would probably have gone with the 2 cyclinder 16 or 18 hp engine. It will fit easier than the 3 cyclinder, I just happened upon a deal for the 3 cyclinder. Good luck with your repower. Royce

Yanmar is the way to go in this part of the world

My 1981 h30 was equipped with a Yanmar 2GM Raw water cooled, 13 hp. When the subject of repowering comes up, the obvious choice for us is the Yanmar 2GM20F. It's a fresh water cooled 20hp that bolts right into the existing mounts. Price? $10000.00 Canadian, installed.
