I'm in the beginning stage of restoring a 21' Venture. My father has two engines, a 75 hp and a Seagull 7 hp. Can someone tell me the benefits of each and which one is the appropriate one to use? I'd also be interested in knowing the negative impact of using a 75 hp. I have a good idea which is appropriate, but I need some back up data and info to prove to my brother who currently has inherited the 7 hp. Thanks

The 75 is too big, too heavy and too

powerful for so small a sail boat. The Seagull was purpose built for sailboats. And they are repairable.

If I were in your place

I'd take the 75 hp and trade it in on a 5 hp long shaft. The seagull is not universally well thought of.

I think

When a displacement hull is over powered it creates a plowing type of wake at the bow. and it causes the boat to ride low in the water from all the air in the wake. (I was just thinking however ) ;D Denise

I'd sell both the 75 and the 7 and buy a modern, new or used, four-stroke of about 8 hp. Even a recent (not over two or three years old) 2-stroke would work.

Seagull is the best engine I ever owned.

Put the Seagull on the Venture. It will provide you with years of trouble free motoring providing you change the plug annually. I never had a Seagull (I owned four) fail to start. Jim

Seagull and best are words never heard together

I once had a boss who told he that his Ford Pinto was the best car he ever owned. Couldn't resist asking - have you ever owned a different car? Surprise - his answer was "no".

have it right. A small 4stroke longshaft motor about 4 to 6hp would be ideal.

Smaller Engine

Agree on using the 7hp or similar at least, the 75hp is way to big. I had a Venture 22 with an 8hp on it and it was fine. Can't imagine what all the weight of a 75hp would do to sailing performance.

4-6hp 4 stroke

I had a 7.5 hp on a 26' Macgregor and it would move the boat to hull speed at 1/2 throttle. Full throttle didn't add much or any speed just made a bigger stern wave. The 7.5 honda was old and fairly heavy but was quiet and very reliable. Mixing oil and gas is a pain!!! Plus a modern 4 stroke will use about half as much fuel as an older two stroke. I always feel a little guilty about the oil sheen that most two strokes make on the water. A 4 stroke has more torque and turns less rpms than an equivalient two stroke meaning a larger more efficent prop is possible. The only real advantage of a two stroke is that it is lighter than a 4 stroke of the same horse power. The seagull should provide plenty of horsepower for a 21' sailboat.

Get a 9.9 electric start, long shaft

Don't get a Seagull... they are the loudest motors. You won't be able to hear anything. Horrid things 1920 tech.

Cost and weight

At outboardsales.com a 9.8hp tohatsu costs $1979 and weighs 81.5#s A 6 HP costs $1289 and weighs #55s. Even if the extra cost isn't a problem the extra weight would be a problem for me. And it would be rare where the extra horsepower is needed such as going into a 50kt breeze. Another problem with an oversized engine is that engines need to be ran about 60% capacity to prevent carbon buildup. A 6hp ran resonably hard will outlive a 9.9hp that is ran near idle most of the time. If the 9.9 would give increased performance it would be worth the cost and aggravation. One last thing to consider is the motor mount. Better check and see if the motor mount can handle the extra weight and stress of a larger motor. You will want to raise the motor for better sailing.

Seagull Outboard

Thanks for your reply, as it turns out, the Seagull is a 2 hp outboard, and from the responses received, this isn't useful either. I'll pursue the 4 stroke option!
