Venture 21 Mainsheet rigging

A new (to me) Venture 21. The mainsheet swiveling cam cleet is attached to the port rail. This is a true annoyance. I am used to mainsheets being on the centerline of the cockpit somewhere. Having to constantly reach to port for the mainsheet unbalances the boat and makes coming about disorderly and (bitch, bitch, moan, gripe moan).... anyway, where do you guys have YOUR mainsheet cleets attached? I would really like to get it mounted on the centerline somewhere so it is easy to reach on all points of sail. Pics would be appreciated as I am not very mechanical and need these things explained very simply. I appreciate your help in advance.

Mainsheet Options

I have owned both a Venture 21 and a Venture 23 with the mainsheet camcleat attached to the port rail. I did not like the arrangement at first, but over time I do not pay any attention to it. I also owned a Gulf Coast 21 with the camcleat located on the boom. I never got used to that arrangement because it was hard to reach downwind. Some options are to move it to the boom, to a position above the tiller on a traveler or bridge, below the tiller by putting a block where the camcleat is now and running the sheet to a camcleat below the tiller or running it forward on the boom which loses some of the mechancial advantage. I would leave it where it is until you are absolutely sure you want to change it. I have found out, however, that changes are usually easy to undo. If you move it to the boom, you will change the mechancial advantage from four to one to either three to one or five to one, unless you fasten the bitter end of the sheet to the boom rather than the starboard rail. Mac mainsheets

In defense of the Mac arrangement, it is simple and effective, and one of the few possible with the tiller and poptop features. I try to have the sheet always handy in that its irrelevant where the cam is. That is, the sheet is across my knee or draped across the top of the tiller where I can work it from where I am. Its something that becomes a habit after awhile. That said, there's no reason it couldn't be different. I've seen a traveler installed inconveniently across the cockpit seats. Or you could lead the sheet to a cam&lead centerline under the tiller somewhere. Or you could lead it forward along the boom like a sailing dinghy; perhaps the cam cleat could then be located on the bridge deck, perhaps offset from the companionway. I don't know of an alternative that is really satisfactory. I think most Mac 21/22/25 sailors adapt to it in time.

mainsheet

I've got a 1974 21ft venture and the mainsheet is mounted on the transom to the rear of the boom. Two pulleys-1 pulley and a camcleat. It seems to work alright, but on a windy day, when I let the main way out,it does't seem to keep the boom as low as I would like and lets the main bellow and catch more air.I'm going to mount the mainsheet more under the boom. Mainsheet moved to transom!

I am still new to Mac's. I have an 85 MAC25. In my marina are two others. Both have had the mainsheet moved to the transom. Mine will also once I have the time. Although I don't have pics here is a web site of pretty much the same modification. I have sailed my friends MAC with it and it is very sturdy.

Bob: Here's a picture of my V24 end boom sheeting, which I believe is original. Like others, I was not sure I'd like it, but the more I sail it (1 and 1/2 years), the more I like it. Good Luck, Randy LaRoche 1971 V24 - Freedom Phoenix, AZ
