Does anyone have experience with a ventless propane water heater, such as the Excell 1000? Thanks

These are NOT approved for marine installations no matter how much that manufacturer lies to you. Some insurance companies will demand removal if found in a survey.. Caveat Emptor!!!

While the "risks" may not seem huge to you, they are present, and people have died in the past. Insurers abhore covering known risks, and when presented with undocumented risks that can blame on the owner, they will refuse to pay.
Better check twice with your insurer. And I doubt that any surveyor will approve such.

There is no such thing as a "ventless" propane water heater approved for safe use aboard boats. This however does not stop shady companies from misleading BS marketing tactics and stealing your hard earned money while boldly lying to you..
Excel has been notified that their heaters DO NOT meet the minimum marine safety standards, they are well aware of this, yet they refuse to change their tactics. Marine LPG water heaters must be sealed combustion units. This means both combustion and exhaust air come from the exterior of the vessel.

I have a ventless fireplace with an ODS in my den at home and also have one in my office. On my boat I have 3 CO detectors. I would NEVER install a ventless gas appliance in my boat.
Good advice. All "Thumbs Down". I will not be having a relationship with a ventless propane water heater. Now on to my next genius idea.
