57% of owners say they have better than adequate cabin ventilation while at anchor, according to last week's Quick Quiz. Are you getting enough fresh air? Would you like to open a few more ports... or close a few for good? Air your opinions here.

What's the Skinny on Scoops?

Hello All: I would very much like to maximize the flow of air coming through the boat while at anchor. I have two hatches, one above the head and one in the V-Berth. Does anyone know how effective the "Windscoop" or "Breeze Booster" is? I saw a few in Annapolis. Also, how effective are those teensie-weensie 12 volt fans for cooling off a 27' Catalina? Thanks everyone for responding so promptly and completely to all my posts. The information has proven to be invaluable. Most sincerely, Melody Miller

Teensie-weensie 12 volt fans move a lot of air...

...especially useful when underway in boistrous conditions when hatches and ports are dogged shut. In response to Melody's query, some Hela fans below really move the air. I have six (6) Hela 2-speed fans aboard -- one each in fwd head, fwd statroom, after cabins, and two in the salon (over galley and navsta). We usually use the low speed which is exceptionally quiet and minimizes the already increadably low current draw. I try mount the fans near a hatch or port so that, when open, they tend to draw air into the boat. PRACTICAL SAILOR gives Hela top recommendation. We concur - really increases the quality of life belowdeck. Stay cool-- Ernie April
