Peggy, Could a closed battery area (no ventilation) just above the holding tank be contributing to a sulfurous smell? I assume the gases given off by charging have to go somewhere.

They do indeed, but
I don't THINK they're your culprit. A wet dirty bilge is a dark stagnant swamp that can generate the same malodorous anaerobic gasses as a holding tank. If your bilge appears to be clean and dry, look for trapped water in that area. But first, check the tank and fittings for any leaks.
