Ventilation or lack there of

I have a 94 H23.5 which I really like but like everyone else if it only had..... I am considering installing an opening port in the berth under the cockpit. I have seen this done on another 23.5 and it may be from the factory but I'm not sure. I would like to install the port opening into the cockpit on the starboard side forward of the locker and another on the port side in the same place. Any reason this is a bad idea structurally or otherwise? The boat is mainly sailed on a lake with an occasional trip to Florida around Pensacola. A friend and I looked at the location for the ports this last weekend and his thoughts were that they needed to be short lengthwise so they would not flex when standing in the cockpit.

Mechanical solution

I too have a 23.5 and the lack of ventilation below can be pretty miserable. I bought a 12 volt squirrel cage blower. It is sold by Boats US and it is ridiculously expensive (around $160.00) Its called a Blue Blower and it is very well made and rugged. I have it hard wired to my battery and just move it about the cabin and cockpit when I need a breeze. It comes in two versions, a 120 v ac and 12v dc. The 120V version moves more air, but the 12V one does very well. It has proven to be the solution to my hot, stuffy cabin problems. Alan Long S/V Random Access

opening ports

On the later versions, Hunter did put an opening port in the area you are speaking of on the starboard side. I have done that on both sides. You have a ceiling/wall interior liner which is not structural in that area. You will need to cut out using the pattern normally suppllied with the opening port; however, if one is not included, then patterning after the window is ok but can be tricky. The main thing is to liberally caulk and clean up after before it dries. Crazy Dave Condon

How Many Will Fit?

I have thought about adding one to the port side and now am wondering if it is possible to add more than one per side. What do you think Dave?
