I have just purchased a '72 Catalina 22. There is very little ventilation in the boat. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get more air into the cabin? Are there add-on hatchs? Thanks, -tap

Solar vents

There are really cool little solar vents that you can install. All it entails is cutting a hole (ugh!) in your deck and popping the little bugger in (sealing with 3M 4200 of course). They're fairly low profile although not flush and they can really get the air pumping through. You could also install 12v fans and hook them up to your new electrical system too. LaDonna

Wind Sock

Try a wind sock they work great at anchor. Just spent a week on the boat with the wind sock and a few fans were very comfortable . Rob

Windsock Two

Hi Tim, I think what Robert's talking about is a little triangle piece of parachute material that if correctly placed over the forward hatch, and secured with light line in the shape of a funnel, will pull in lots of air when at anchor. We used a pair while in the BVI this last April. Boy did they work! Here in Indy I better find one with a misquito net!!! Good Sailing, Jay Beery

Has anyone made one of these windsocks?

Just wondering if the windsock can be made cheaply or if you have to buy one.

There are patterns

I believe you can find one in SAIL's book on "Things that work" (I think that's the title??). If not there, I know I've seen the patterns around. Check out some of Lin Pardey's books or other cruising books. The pre-made units are pretty spendy but you can find them used - I bought my "Wind Scoop" for $10 at a swap meet. LaDonna

ventilate me

Hi! My friend who owns a 28MKII gave me the idea of cutting nylon (plastic??) screening to fit my forward hatch, and my companionway. Self-stick velcro is placed on the boat itself, and stapled to the cut-to-fit screening. You get air moving all through the boat. I don't remember ever sleeping on the boat w/out at least a light blanket. It works great, and it's very inexpensive! Good luck! the Pirate
