I was looking through the ronco plastics web site and noticed a drawing that has the vent section of the vented loop going to a hose to a thru hull vent fitting. I have never seen this but it makes sense. Anyone doing this?

there are other situations where it is preferable to route the vent opening elsewhere such as engine discharge water vents which are located in or over the engine. Rather than chance backup or plugged water to spray the engine or leak for a prolonged period there, many folks vent the elbow vent away from this area overboard.

Not the best idea...

It's an easy fix for a small problem, but it's not a good fix because the vent tube is so small that, unless it's inspected and cleaned out often, it becomes blocked by sea water minerals or waste...very quickly turning the vented loop into an UNvented loop that no longer has any ability to break a siphon. But because there's no dribble, it's "out of sight, out of mind" and ignored. Vented loops should have an air valve installed in the vent...a valve that only allows air INTO the line, nothing out. Air valves aren't entirely maintenance free either...they too require periodic cleaning and replacement.

Thank you

Thanks to all of you for you help with my many questions. I suggest that any of you who are undertaking waste system change, get Peggie's book and read the archives here at this site. I can not find any source other of this much information anywhere.
