Vented-loop not vented!

Peggy, yesterday I removed a teak panel behind which is the vented-loop. The vent was capped since it is directly under a shelf. This is original on an H37C for you other Cherubini owners. There may be room for an elbow fitting between the loop and the shelf. Question: does the vent hose have to remain higher than the loop? Could the vent hose drop down to go through the same hole as the waste line which is lower than the loop? What is the penalty for not having the loop vented(for the past 21 years!)?

Vented Loop on 37c

I've got the same arrangement on my 37c, but the "cap" on the loop has a very small hole in it, under which is a thin, circular piece of flexible material that acts as a one-way vent valve. I had to fabricate a new one on my 37c, since the old vent cap had been leaking a little (noticed it when I put some blue deodorant in the head). The fix seems to work, but I added a 6-inch piece of hose to the cap and attached it with a clamp to the cap, leaving the top of the hose open. It just sort of sticks up from the vent. My reasoning is that if the vent leaks a little, whatever leaks out of the vented loop cap will sooner or later ooze back on down into the line (rather than onto the fiberglass behind the head). You might want to check whether your unit is really capped off, or whether the pinhole in the top of the cap has just corroded shut.

Thanks Walt.

Shows what I know about waste systems. I assumed it had to have a hose to the outside. That's a tight fit under that shelf but I'll take it off and check. It was not too difficult getting to the loop since the head is out of the boat. Awaiting delivery on a new Raritan Cricket.

Glad to be of assistance

I've been crawling around the innards of my 37c for some 6 years now -- it's nice to be able to share some of what I've learned about the boat. Walt.

After 21 years, I'd leave it alone, Ed.*
