Vent location

Peggy, I have seen on these forum pages that the holding tank vent on Catalina 30's is marginal at best. Where would you suggest a larger vent be located on a Catalina 30? Should it be located high on the deck so as not to fill with water when heeled over? Should the opening be vertical so as not to accumulate rain water? Please advise what factors we should consider. Thanks

Unless you want to move the tank

there's not a lot you can do to improve tank ventilation on most Catalinas except get it out of the rail stanchion and into a thru-hull...the midship tank location under a settee makes it impossible to run a short straight relatively horizontal vent line. You can improve things some by running a longer vent line at a shallower angle to a thru-hull further forward on the hull at the toe rail, but that's about all. If you put it inside the toe rail you can put a forward facing clam-shell on it (which becomes a toe-stubber) to keep the rain out. However, just getting it out of the rain stanchion WILL help...enough that using Odorlos may work. If not, and if you're willing to move the tank, we can talk about where to put it.
