Vent for fresh water tank

In the process of fixing my water ingress problem I came across the vent pipe for the fresh water tank in the chain locker space.Presumably this leaks (doesn't everything?) when the boat is heeled over and the fresh tank is nearly full.Is there anything that can be done? And does the fresh water tank leak through the big red screw-on cap when the tank is full (again when boat is heeled)? Finally, do people bother cleaning out the vent pipe - presumably it is pretty gunged up after 40 years? :)ThanksJohn

John, I was sure that water leaked from the big red screw on cap on the water tank in wild conditions. There was water in the recess it sits in, and I could not think of any other way it could have got there. I sealed it with something that was supposed to stay flexible. I can't say I noticed a significant improvement subsequently, but I felt better about it. I suspect most of my water in the forepeak in livly conditions came through the hull/deck join, but I don't want to go there. One day....

You should do the Steve Birch test to the water in the forepeak, that is taste it; if salt from outside; if fresh from water pipes.I've just realised some of you sail on fresh water so test invalid.Another possible leak souce is the forehatch, I had a leak there and it seemed to dampen the sides of the foepeak and run down onto the tank, I thought it was the hull/deck joint but eventually put new rubber sealing strip on the forehatch and solved the problem.Mike

I think that in the past, one of the freshwater sailors suggested a variation of the taste for salt or fresh. Fill the fresh water tank with vodka, so the test becomes taste for fresh or vodka. Hi there,Why would you vent the water tank? It is a small tube above the fill tube…but it is right on the bottom of the tank 2” above the bottom. Once the water fills above this small tube, it sucks water not air. I can’t see how this works, maybe if there was a hard tube inside the tank running to the bottom side of the tank at the top…I could see how it would work. Just wondering.LarrySent from Windows MailFrom: n4lbl alan.schulman@... [AlbinVega]Sent: ‎Tuesday‎, ‎April‎ ‎14‎, ‎2015 ‎8‎:‎56‎ ‎AMTo: n4lbl alan.schulman@... [AlbinVega]
