Peggy, We have replaced the vent line on "Leprechaun" and we ALWAYS use your products KO/CP but we have read about cleaning the vent. We vent to the outside of the boat and there is a screen there with a stainless steel cover. Any recommendation as far as running water in from the outside? or filling the tank with fresh water to let it run out the overflow? or let it go..it is clean now. Thanks Alan & Eileen

Remove the screen and the cover...

They serve no useful purpose and create more problems than they solve. That screen and cover are only there to act as "flame arrester"....fuel and water tank vents are the same size (which is the only reason waste vents are also 5/8")...so boat builders just use the same vent through-hull on all of 'em 'cuz they can just one in huge quanitity.

Thanks

The Vent is a stainless steel piece that is attached to the outside of the boat, removing it would leave a hole but I can remove the screen on the inside, apparently used to keep wasps/bugs/flies out? Thanks and I have your book it is very informative.. Alan

Why not just replace the whole thru-hull?

Use an open bulkhead fitting. Put a high clamshell over it if it ends up in the water when you're heeled. No..the purpose of the screen is NOT to keep bugs out. As I said in my first reply, it's a spark arrester.

Alan, I left the clam shell scupper on our...

vent through hull alone. The screen is built into the scupper for a reason. After every pump out I keep ours clear using city water pressure. I have a cone shaped plastic garden nozzle that screws onto a garden hose pistol type sprayer. This nozzle fits over our boat's clam shell type scupper so that I can squirt water under pressure through the vent line. I've been doing this ever since I unclogged our vent line left by the PO. Our vent line remains clear and trouble free four years later. Another skipper on this site uses a drain plunger. He removed the wooden handle from the rubber plunger and fitted a garden hose nozzle in its place after drilling a hole for the water to flow. Great idea. That way you can use pressurized water to force any material back into the tank. Terry

Terry, the screen IS there for a reason...

If you look for "vent thru-hulls" in the catalogs, you'll see that there are no different ones for fuel, water or waste...they're all are "one size fits all"...fuel, water, waste. That screen has only on purpose: it's a spark arrester for a gas tank vent. It serves no purpose at all in a holding tank vent except to corrode and become clogged with rust, dirt, pollen and spider webs. If you knock out the screen, you'll prob'ly increase the air flow in and out of your tanks by 150%...not to mention the amount of water and water pressure when you backflush the vent line.

not!

The screen also servers as a method to keep the mud daubers out of the vent. I have had them make nests in water & fuel vents.

I've had to clean mud dauber nests out of

the venturi pipe on my grill, Steve....the li'l buggers will pack anything they can. But that doesn't make a screen in a holding tank vent a good idea.
