All of the waterways are blocked off for oil containment,
so we took a road trip in the car to show everybody
what goes on in Venice and what the Louisiana coastline
looks like.

I apologize that we're not on a sailboat, but a 24ft S2
has been loaned to me for use while I'm in the south!

More sailing videos coming soon!

Hey everyone, I really don't want to move this thread into the War Room so please don't wander into the politics of it. Thanks!

Interesting in that I've never been there and could only image what it looks like. Now I have an idea.

Joel, next outing, go to the North Shore, via the Causeway.. The area around Mandeville is fine; look into Fontainebleau State Park.. continue to Slidell.. cross over the Highway 90 bridge to Fort Pike then drive back toward New Orleans .. Nice area.. I'd like to take you guys a sail on the Pontchartrain, but I have some family issues not allowing me to do that now..

My sound is terrible for this but the video didn't show me anything. It looked as good as the harbor in Baltimore. I have seen the news footage and have lived and fished on the gulf coast in the Gulfport,MS area. I have a spot in front of my home where a lawn cutting crew spilled gasoline two years ago and the grass has not recovered yet. When I was young it was common practice to spread used engine oil on the gravel roads to keep the dust down. It also kept the weeds from growing. There wasn't much traffic so where the gravel was clean grass would grow in the middle but where it had been oiled nothing would grow and in the hot summer weather it smelled bad and there was always a sheen of oil on the water when it rained.

My sister-in-law lives in Baton Rouge and one year when we were visiting they took us to Slidell and we joined a green tour of the bayous. The guide had a big alumnum skow boat with a plexy canopy on it and a lot of bench seats. It was a very pleasant afternoon.

My Guess

My guess is that there was no way to get back into the marsh. I think around Venice that all the channels are boomed off, and only work boats are allowed anywhere near there. This time of the year when you see that many boats tied up at the dock, there is obviously something wrong. Those docks should be nearly vacant. It is a very beautiful area, but my fear is it will never return to what it once was. At least not in my lifetime. No matter how much money is thrown at it.
