I have only passed through Venice on the ICW. Sailing was out on the gulf. Venice has a rep of as not being boater friendly due to a crazy cop who would run off anchored boats. I think he has retired but the attitude remains.

Venice is between Sarasota Bay and Charlotte Harbor Both provide excellent sheltered sailing. Both have launch ramps. Don't know about ramps in Venice. Suggest you take a vacation in Florida and explore for youselves. Now is the worst weather. If you can stand July,August, and September you will love the rest of the year

Very Nice

I have passed through a few times and nice town to live by many people even ones don't live there say is their favorate place to visit.
Sailing would be out into the gulf and venice is in mostly ICW so more power boat traffic.
Venice is a good location for sailing to great places north and south of it but you will need to go out into the gulf for real sailing.
I live in Port Charlotte and keep my boat in Charlotte Harbor for real good sailing with out going into gulf and that is why I choose Charlotte Harbor.
I Kayak up in Venice a few times and stump pass, very nice clean blue water but lots of power boat traffic and shallow water need to stay in channel.
If you have trailering sailboat you have many places to put in,Check out
Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte while you are looking.

Re: Very Nice

Dennis,

We moved to Venice five years ago and feel that we made a geat choice. We have a 34 Hunter that we sail on the gulf 3 or 4 times a week. Easy in and out through the all weather channel to the ICW. There are two boat ramps which are very near the gulf. The local marine patrol police have been nothing but friendly toward me. The "issue" some may refer to is the prohibition of overnight docking at the Higel Marine Park.

In addition to boating there fabulous beaches and kayaking backwaters.

We belong to the Venice Sailing Squadron which sponsors local racing, cruising and socializing between and amongst the sailors of Venice. The Venice Yacht Club is also a very active yacht club.

Come for a visit, go for sail, you'll like it.

I used to keep a boat in Venice harbor until I got tired of running aground. If your from Colorado your not going to like the summer there. I you decide to go for it Anything that draws over 3' will give problems

Love Florida

My wife and I are retired and live in Port Charlotte 2 years so far and my wife loves it here and moved from NY but you will need to adjust to the heat and light winds, thunderstorms, lighting in summer time, but the rest of the coller times is the best sailing weather.
You will have no problem with your 22 sailboat,I have Hunter 36 with 5' draft and can sail all day in Charlotte Harbor with the deepest water 22' and sail to some local great places and beach, yes shallow water just like up in NY.
Yes sailboats use their boats alot less in july,august.Sept. but the rest of the year you will love it and may want a bigger boat.
Just like every place the weather is different each some times cooler and some times hotter and plenty of wind and some times too much wind just like we had in NY.
Your 22 if swing up keel will let you go where most can not and be on beach easy fun time and swim off beach with your boat just like power boaters, you will need to learn when to boat with the thunderstorms like I did, scary at first but time will it better.
I am going north with my motor home for a month or two but lots stay and enjoy less traffic and people.
Some hate the heat and don't like it here but boating and Kayaking is great.
