VEGAtarian Rendezvous

Hey Chuck:

You are right...There was also a commotion that night when the wind
picked up and a couple of power boaters rafted together found their
anchor dragging about midnight...Anyway, I got in touch with Howard
Barbour. His wife Sheila own "Shiva" and they live on Orcas. Sheila
and Mitzi are "it" to organize the Rendezvous. I believe the
preferred date is July 1-4...July 1 being our holiday and the 4th
yours...Hope to see you there.

Hello All:

It appears that some anxious VEGAtarians (those still working for a
living) are trying to schedule holidays to coincide with the PNW
Rendezvous this year. Some of you may remember that I suggested
Newcastle Island Marine Park (near Nanaimo BC) would be a great
starting or ending place (depending on which end of your vacation you
are on),to meet this year. It has the added attraction that if you
wanted family or friends to meet you then they can camp on the island
as well. Great facilities, the dock space is first come so some of us
may have to anchor but I am sure we will be able to kibbutz with
everyone. Dates suggested so far are the weekends of August 15-17 and
August 22-24. Your thoughts?

Brian: So this year Helen and I will make it for sure! I retired and am consulting so am more flexible. Calimera sits on her trailer in the barn waiting for some attention from me. We're enjoying Hawaii right now and understand the PNW is wet and cold-not so here on Maui! We'll put her in at Port Townsend and come over from there, so anywhere east of Victoria is fine with us.

Either date works for us (retired :) folks. I'm a bit concerned about
the venue, though.
A 'first come...' at Newcastle Island in the height of the season is a
hit and miss affair. My preference is for somewhere we can reserve a
few spots ahead of time. And you're right, Bill: The PNW is cold and wet right now, but we've
still managed to get out about once a week for a few hours!

What about Saltspring then Peter...Several Marina's there and it is a
fun place too and perhaps more central. Would you like to make
enquiries?

Hey Bill:

So glad to hear that you and Helen will be coming. It's been a few
years but now that your are in the "retirement/consulting business",
I hope you will take more time to visit VEGAtarians in the PNW. Do
you still have that cute little dog that Diana and I were introduced
to many years ago? Wishing I was in Hawaii too because it has been a
combination of rain and snow for the last couple of weeks here. Stay
tuned as Peter Jacombs is definitely the go to guy for Vega's in BC
these days. You may or may not know, but I sail an Alberg currently
(like a Vega only bigger).

Cheers - Brian

Brian: Yes, I knew that you had gotten a case of "two-foot-itis" and bought a bigger boat. I?was introduced to?Peter in PT last fall by Chuck and Laura who supposedly were working on Leilea. Looked like a lot of talking and exercising of the right arm (just teasing, Chuck!). The last couple of years have had other priorities than sailing (not by choice) but this year should be better. Yes, we still have Sophie the wire-haired dachshund. She's not a sailor and can't even swim-just rolls over in the water. I look forward to seeing you all.?Bill

Hello again Bill...One good thing about retiree's is that they check
their e-mail and respond regularly...except Jim Elder of
course...Unfortunately I cannot stop the virus and have developed a
case of "2 more feet itis". Officially, Putachieside is for sale. The
boat I have been chasing has finally arrived, a Contessa
32...definitely our last.

Brian .... you are shameless! Two-foot-more-itis, eh. Well, I have
to admit I've got the same affliction but, so far, have managed to
keep it at bay. The Albin Ballad is the object of my interest.
Fortunately there are none around here with a "For Sale" sign.

But every time I take the Vega out I think "What more could I
possibly want"! It's still the perfect boat for us.

THE PNW RENDEZVOUS:
What do people who attend value most?
Good docking facilities?
Good shore facilities (Pub, restaurant, showers, laundry, etc.)?
Scenic venue?
Shopping close by?
How far do people want to travel to get there?
What else is important?

We really enjoyed Lopez Island last year. Fisherman Bay was a great
spot to tie up and the shore facilities were great, with an
interesting village close by, and a great place to dinghy sail! I
must remember to come in at slack tide next time to minimize damage
to other boats ;-)

One place I stayed at last spring was Telegraph Harbour Marina on
Thetis Island.
There was a Catalina Rendezvous there, but they squeezed me in near
the fuel dock for my one night stay. They had very good facilities.

Anyway, lets kick the idea around a bit and see what people want,
then come up with a location.

Bill I'll have you know that we actually completed our rather large
project and are now moored at the Port of Friday Harbor where I've
discovered thay also brew a very drinkable IPA at the Ale House.
Brian, you are shameless. If there is another boat in my future, Ive
decided that it will be seventy foot steel ketch and be named "Nostromo"

Now without the obligation to go to the office every day or to travel
on business I have time to help with the rendezvous and the
flexibility to attend wherever and whenever. I'm not very familiar
with the area yet but am looking forward to learning my way around.

Unfortunately, Laura apparently cannot resist a challenge and has
signed a one year contract to manage the West Marine store here in
Friday Harbor. We are in the process of getting settled now. I spoke
to Mitzi (City Zoo) yesterday and plan to get together with her and
Bear soon. I've found a bookstore near the port with a coffee bar and
wi-fi and I may sign up for bbx if I can be convinced that it works
as advertised.

Now that our boat is back together and has had her sea trial motoring
from PT to Friday Harbor I hope we'll be seeing more of you.

Aloha ka'kou a hui ho!

PS: After thirty years of enless summer I'm rather enjoying the
weather up here in the PNW.

Thanks Brian.
Do we need to contact the Marina and reserve on an individual basis, or can we just show up?

Hi Peter...I believe you can just show up but I suppose it may be prudent to let them know that you intend to be there. Monday is a holiday so better safe than sorry...
