Vega V1851-Lake Champlain

Hi all vega owners across the pond. Our secretary, Diana Webb, has just
been to Canada for her son's wedding and whilst travelling across Lake
Champlain saw a blue Vega sailing across Lake Champlain with all sails set.
She was Vega Number 1851, any ideas what the name of the Vega and owner is?

Kind Regards

The blue hulled Vega No 1851 is named Annie. She is owned by
a couple in Montreal. I've been on board and she is very nicely
maintained and frequently sailed. Annie is moored on the north
end of Monty's Bay ( about 7 miles southof the Canadian Border)
There are four Vegas around Monty's Bay, ANNIE, La Boheme;
moored beside Annie; and directly across the lake on a small
bay on North Hero Island is another Vega with a yellow hull, also
owned by someone in Montreal.

Moored on the southern part of Monty's Bay is my own Vega
No. 1563 "Frana". She has been on Lake Chamlain since she
was purchased by her first owner in 1972.

Best Regards,
Antonio

Hi Steve:

Webb by the way is a famous name in Vermont. If Diana used that name in Vermont eyebrows would raise because the Vanderbilt-Webbs founded the famous Proctor Marble Works in Vermont and the famous Shelburne Museum. Electra Havemeyer Webb was the main benefactor of the museum which is located adjacent to the Webb Estate in Shelburne Vermont. There is a fellow whose name is Quackenbush who owns a Vega in Charlotte Vermont, not far from the ferry. I believe his name is Ken. This may have been his Vega which as I recall is a very attractive Vega.

I lived in Vermont for a long time prior to emigratin to New York.

Kind Regards to you and Ms. Webb

Jim

Dear Steve and Jim,

Ken Quackenbush kept his Vega in Charlotte Vermont. About two
years ago he had some health problems that prevented him
from sailing. I beleive that he was over 80 years old at the time
and still rowed out to his Vega which he kept on a mooring at
Point Bay Marina.
He donated the Vega to the Lake Champlain Marine Museum,
from whom I purchased it. It is a very nice boat and was owned
by Ken since 1972. It is Vega 1563 "Frana". It has a white hull.

The other Vegas are all of Canadian Origin and winter at Ille Aux
Noix just north of the American border.

Other than these four I have seen no other Vegas on the lake. Do
you know of any others Jim?

Best Regards
Antonio

Antonio:

I too used to keep my boat at Point Bay marina on Lake Champlain. She was a Dutch built Rhodes designed 1962 sloop that we called "44" because that was her sail number. When we moved to NY the wooden spar and other factors prompted our move to our Vega 3228. I used to see and admire Ken's Vega on the lake, and I am very glad it came into your good and appreciative hands. I knew some people who were hoping to buy his boat.

I know of no other Vegas in your part of the world except one which Bruce Hill had listed at Shelburne two years ago.

Take care and happy sailing on beautiful Lake Champlain.

Jim
