Vega replacement Engine?

Hi All,
It looks like im going to have to change out my combi pertol engine, it runs away fine most of the time but it has conked out on me a few times lately.

So the big question is what can i replace it with? i would consider any options but slightly hinging toward brand new, also what about prop and shaft etc would all that have to be replaced to?

My vega is the type 1 vega 1970 with original 022 combi petrol.

any help would be great

I would suggest looking at the Beta Marine Engine. Two different friends put Betas in their Vegas--I think the 2 cyclinder, 14 horse--and they are both really happy. We sold our Vega and restored an old, slightly larger sailboat, and we put in a Beta in that too. We really like it, and REALLY like the follow service and help from the company.

I have a little 18hp Yanmar that works fine. The previous owners replaced it and the transmission as well as everything associated between it and the prop. I think they had to due to the changing rake angle of the engine on the new mounts. I doubt there are any substandard engines manufacturers on the market. The service department at your local retailer would probably be the deciding factor.

I replaced by old Volvo with the Beta and have been very
happy with it. It's the perfect fit for our boats. Talk to
Steve Birch on this list. He supplies the entire package
including prop, shaft, transmission, instrument panel, to
fit directly into the Vega.

Hi Scot,
I changed everything but NOT the shaft (25 mm). That way you can use the stuffing box (which I think is very good!).
Sorry, I can't tell you about the engine, though I recommend a diesel engine.

We replaced the Albin 021 with a Yanmar 18. We did have to make new stringers for the mounts. We kept the stuffing box but changed the shaft and prop. The Yanmar comes with a gearbox so the Combi isn't needed. Down side was more HP than needed and somewhat higher fuel consumption. All in all I haven't been thrilled with the engineering. UV caused the panel to crack and the ignition switch to fall apart. The panel was supplied with ferrous machine screws to hold it together and I've just sanded and repainted the tachometer to deal with the rust. Cost for the engine back in the mid 1990s was around $6,000. That didn't include the shaft, prop, stringers, etc. Also very difficult to change the oil. As a do over I'd probably go with the Beta.
