vega mast support problem.

Hello dear Vega ovners, during this winter i am refreshing my vega 799. I cant find exact info where and how you beef up mast support, because i cant anymore close boat doors. If it would be possible, someone could post some photos or some instructions how to replace it. What material should i use, i heard about stainless steel, aluminium, but then there has been guys just fixing it with plywood. And aperently my vega dont have mast leg, did they even came with those, and is there some internet shops where i could order it.. Hope to get soon some usefull answers.Roland,Vega 799, Helsinki

I can't help you with how to fix it but some others on the list have
repaired theirs. The Prototype for the Vega was a wooden boat. Back
then we did not tighten the rigging very tight. Most boats had a
mast going down to the keel and if you tightened the rig tight and
left it tight it would push the keel down and open the seams. This
more loose rigging was a big part of the reason glass boats were
faster in racing. Vega is glass but the bulkhead and mast suppoert
are wood just as is a wooden boat. Back in the 1960's nobody ever
dreamed of pulling the rigging banjo tight. I keep mine loose and
only tighten them if I am going to race. The difference in pointing
and speed to windward are almost unrecognizable except if you are
racing around the buoys. The Vegas were never intended to have
tight rigging. This doesn't solve your problem but some here who
have fixed the same problem on their boats should come on here with
some advice. Doug

I guess I am about to find out if we permit attachments. If the .pdf
document that I've attached doesn't propagate I'll send it directly. I
hope it helps.

Alan, There wasn't a pdf attached to that message but if you could send a copy to me that would be great- the mast support on my vega is going to be reinforced this summer and any suggestions about how to do it would be much appreciated. Hi Alan,

As that is a document that I may want to see as well, maybe you could post it to the yahoo groups file section:

I think that there is a little additional info in the files regarding the mast support already, but the more the merrier.

Matias

Hi Roland, I'm guessing that you have a Series 1 by your hull number. My question for you is are you trying to fix a problem or are you trying to avoid a future problem with the mast support. I have Lyric, hull # 120. The mast support on her is fairly heavy duty compared to other later model Vegas I've been aboard. I've not had any problems with the mast support. I'm not sure when they changed the design. I also do as Doug suggests, keep the wire somewhat loose. Perhaps Steve might want to comment? Hi All

Mast support problems sometime appear when the
standing rigging is set taut, usually for racing purposes. There is a kit
available made from us here in the UK. Email me off group for details (steve@...).

Consists of a stainless support beam with spreader
strip etc.

The Series III Vega dont seem to have this problem
as the support was beefed up considerably during manufacture.

Cheers Steve B

Hi Steve,   Is this the stainless steel arch at the top of the bulk head? While I am redoing my boat I was going to beef up this mast support system while I have the time to take care of it. Please send me the info on what you have for this. Also I think I would like to go with the hinged mast system as well. I will be lowering my mast by myself and the hinged system sounds like that is what I need to do? Please advise. Thanks,Larry V-2761Sent from Windows MailFrom: steve@...Sent: ‎Wednesday‎, ‎February‎ ‎12‎, ‎2014 ‎1‎:‎07‎ ‎AMTo: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com
