Vega Key?

Does anyone know where we can obtain a spare key for the original lock on the cabin washboards on our Vega? We only have one at the moment and I'm worried that it'll either get lost or drop over the side, leaving us locked out.
It's a very odd design and I've been having no luck sourcing one from any of the usual key-cutters. Are they still available or should we just replace the lock - and loose the charm of the original?

I had the same problem. What I did was to take the one key I had to a
machinist friend and he cut one out of just plain steel. It doesn't have the
little ridge in it and that isn't a problem. It does have the little "nub"
at the end that I think aligns the key in the lock. Works just great. We
just used ordinary "soft" steel instead of stainless as it was easier to
work.

I am going to try and many my own keys next. I am not a machinist, but have
a wood shop, so I think I can make these our of one of the really tough
plastics, or maybe aluminum as it is pretty easy to cut with ordinary tools.Chris

I wonder if they would cut you a new one (or two) if you send them a copy (like from a copy machine) of yours?

FYI - I cut two spares out of Lexan using our Dremel.

I was looking at the site. Since I don't read Swedish I am not exactly sure
what it says, but I think the cost for one of these blanks is 286 Swedish
Krona. According to my math that is about $42 USD -- Wow, that is an
expensive key blank. Also, I can find no place outside of Sweden that has
these. I've bought things out of Sweden before and had them sent, but it
sure would be easier to have a US supplier. If not I have a friend who sells
boat parts for HRs that could probably get me a couple (once I take out a
mortgage to afford them :)

Finally, someone wrote that they made a couple keys our of Lexan -- that is
good news as that is exactly what I am going to try myself. The one we cut
out of flat stock works great, but plastic is something anyone can easily
"machine" with wood tools.

One option on some marine panels is to replace the keyswitch; identify the
terminals before purchasing a replacement unit-I've done this a few times,
you get two new keys of a common configuration with the switch. Cost of
the switch was about $30.

Hi!

The text on the swedish key site says:

"Spar keys to old Mobella locks 45A3. Available as left or right. Price 286 Skr. In store"
