Vega ballast?

I want to put a drop centerboard in a Vega. What's the ballast in the keel, iron?

I believe it is iron and is encapsulated in the front half of the keel.rb

Stan,
The Vega ballast is cast iron, encapsulated in fiberglass. Maybe lee boards would be easier to install, or look at one of the Sparkman & Stevens designs, like the Tartan 27, that already has a centerboard.

Interesting.

Obviously heavier and deeper keel would add to stiffness.

But would that in turn require beefing up the standing rigging as the
static load on the rigging would increase?
