Vega and VODCA Newsletters and Practical Sailor

I am so pleased with the interest that my offer has stirred up! And I
know that my husband Jim would be, too.

And Chuck's request that they be made available both on the net and to
those who aren't "connected" seems to be the right thing. Chuck, are
you thinking of printing in the newsletter selected items from a CD
and also making the CD available to Vega association members? What
about Practical Sailor? Would there be a copyright problem there?

Since I had proposed sending everything to Tom Barron to scan and then
forward to Frank Gallando, I guess it comes down to this - Can you
Tom, do all that Chuck is proposing, or would you want to defer to
Adrian Dobrea?

Hi All in the USA Vegas

Just a note. I am the editor for the UK VAGB Newsletter and we have now
decided to download the last six Newsletters to the Web on our Website at
www.vagb.co.uk I have also downloaded a couple of them to the YAHOO Vega
Group. I have found the best way is to download as a PDF file but you will
need acrobat reader to read and/or print them. This method keeps the size
of the files at a manageable length. Please feel free to downlaod these
Newsletters but if you want to keep the Vega Associations running then
please join your country's club so they can afford to keep writing and
printing. I hope this is of some use to all you Vega owners world-wide.

Dru, you have the general idea. I want the archive for myself so I can re-print the old articles, perhaps in a sort of "Blast from the past" column in the current newsletter. Also, the "Vega Owner\'s Maintenance and Repair Manual" has not been updated for many years and I want to comb through the archives to see if there is any additional material I can use in revising that book (I am planning, for example, to add Nick and Jenny\'s account of preparing Tarka the Otter for their circumnavigation). Putting the archives on a CD, perhaps along with the Manual and a photo album, and making it available to the membership of the AVA seems to me an idea who\'s time has come. I have been working towards putting the manual and the archives of my work on CD to make available as a "New Member Package" or part of one, as an incentive for people to join the Assn. and possibly as a means of generating a little revenue to help support the Newsletter. The old archives added to that would make it much more valuable. I was thinking it should be in PDF format with Adobe Acrobat Reader freeware included. One major consideration for me is that the manual costs about US$10 per copy to reproduce and about US$3.00 for domestic postage. Do the math and you can easily see that the membership cost does not cover even that, let alone the newsletter. A CD would be much more economical and could contain much more information, pictures etc.

For the record though, I am not in favor of making >ALL< of the material available on-line (Though I would not attempt to prevent it). Not to put too fine a point on it, but that material is protected by copyright also. It is the property of VODCA, now the American Vega Assn.

Those of you that have paid your dues ($) and receive the Newsletter know that I do not post anywhere near all of the information that appears in print to the Yahoo group. I see the two as complimentary and I\'d like to keep it that way. Our purpose is the exchange of information mutual support and, I hope, to organize regional events like the Rendezvous for members. I feel that those who support the Assn. with their subscription $ are entitled to a little more than those who choose only the free electronic medium of the internet. Steve makes a good point. I wouldn\'t dream of withholding information nor of excluding anyone just because they don\'t subscribe to the newsletter. None of us would. But we wouldn\'t have the benefits we have today if it had not been for the VODCA Newsletter and it\'s successor cannot survive without the support of paying members.

I think putting the information on CD is a good idea and not that
much more work after the docs are scanned in. I appreciate what
Chuck is saying about copyright etc. I'd be glad to help in any way
I can so that this information is available in an appropriate way.
Chuck, if I can be of assistance scanning in the information let me
know.
