Hi all,

I have posted my vega27 on Craigslist this morning.Asking price is $10,500.My plans have changed...somewhat! Love living aboard but what something a bit more roomy and since I'm way up here on the Fraser River, it's quite a hike out to the gulf for any sailing.I'm also in the process of buying an ocean front piece of paradise in the tropics with the plan...or hope, hehe to retire a few years earlier.

Did the Vega - or any other boat except an aluminum one - have aluminum
chainplates? I have never seen one.

The lower shroud terminals anchor in an aluminum channel (U-shaped in
section) which runs for and aft. You can see the channel from below, with an
inspection mirror or by taking out the varnished board that hide the
deck-hull join.

When I rebedded Journeyman's deck fittings I took out the channels and found
them to have corrosion where the shroud anchors go through the channel, I
assume from leaking seawater in contact with the dissimilar metals. I
reinforced mine with an aluminum strip. The corrosion was fairly extensive -
had enlarged the holes - and could have eventually caused a failure of the
rig. It is hard to inspect the channel but I was very glad I did.

Were I sailing to Antarctica (not otherwise) I would replace the aluminum
channels with stainless steel.Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.

When I had my mast and rigging replace by Brion Toss we discussed this as,
being a traditionalist, I was concerned about it. Brion said this method of
attaching the shrouds to a hull has been used on a few boats -- many not all
that effective. But, he said the Vega was one boat where it did work well --
I guess because of the strength of the hull and deck and the way they are
joined. He saw no reason to make any changes, but stainless would eliminate
the inherent corrosion between the the stainless and aluminum and certainly
would make it more secure.
