Does anyone know if it is OK to put a fresh coat VC-17 on the boat before we put it away for the winter. Then we would already have it on for the spring launch. I asked the boat shop I use and he advised that it is not a good idea. But I was just wondering if any one had tried it, and how it worked out. Thanks, Bill Leathen

vc 17

I used vc 17 for years and it worked great . Typically I put it on in the spring ,never the fall . I would call the manufacture and ask them rather than get a lot of opinions from the internet . I know there were years when I put it on a month or so prior to launch .Further a local rigger I know and trust said a coat should last 2 to 3 years so I cant see how doing it in the fall would hurt, but again I am probably missing something so check with the manufacture . I went to a seminar one time at west marine and there was a lot of misinformation about bottom paint . good luck Mike

Go ahead and do it

I'm a big fan of VC17 and have been using it for the last eight years. One of the reasons is that I sometimes leave my boat on the trailer for months. Once or twice it approached a year. The paint did not lose its effectiveness. Check the Forum Archives for stuff that I've written about VC17 over the years. I'll be here if you have more questions. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Could it be depending on the temperature?

I've also used VC17 for years and every second year I paint the whole bottom and the other years I just fill in the "blanks" = damaged spots. However one year I noticed that when I painted on the cold side there were small bubbles in the painting. It had to do with air moisture meeting the cold boat together with the fresh paint - some of my boat yard friends told me. This happened in the springtime and could also happen in the autumn, I guess. The sun warming up one side of the boat and the other is cold until the afternoon. Anyway, there were no damage - I just had to do it all over again. Buy more paint, sand and paint. toomas
