After three years of owning our Legend 37.5, we need to repaint the bottom. She lives in the northern great lakes, so the bottom lasts for 3 years. We will use VC-17 as that is what is already on the bottom. The bottom is not in bad shape - no paint is pealing. It just appears that the paint is thinning out or wearing off, which is what I believe it is supposed to do. Based on my research to date, the appliction instructions are to clean bottom, sand any loose paint, and roll or spray on, thinning as required. While this does not look difficult. I have a couple of questions. First, the insturctions say use 2-3 coats. Does this apply to a repaint job where there already is a coat or two of paint of the bottom? Secondly, does anyone know how much VC-17 it will take to put one coat on our Legend 37.5?

Call Interlux directly. There tech people helped me thru my blister problem and helped select a bottom paint. They will also help calculate how much to buy. I use VC17 also and plan to recoat this year. I'm putting on two coats. A link to Interlux is listed below. Jeff

Our last boat was a H376, the yard recoated this and used 2 1/2 Qts. of VC17. The rudder was not done as this had a white anti fouling. With VC17 if there is still paint there its ok, its not the sort of paint that builds up so you should have no peeling. Recoat the thin spots, If its a very hot day you will find the paint evaporates very quickly, only expose the quantity that you can roll on in a short length of time. tony

I used the stuff with great success for ten years. When it's time to recoat it I usually put one coat on the entire bottom and then recoated the wears area on the bottom and front of the keel. If I had enough left I recoated the water line. That's more paint that the yard would have put on the bottom. I've seen yard thin VC17 with acetone. My rudder was always Shark White

VC 17 is a teflon based hard paint. It does not ablade away like Micron CSC. VC acts to repel growth with the metalic copper and teflon. A very hard finish that can be burnished to a super smooth finish. It can be rolled on with a very low nap roller but spraying is the best. Application coats should be .4mils with 2 to 3 coats. Its ability to repel growth remains as long as the copper remains. Once the copper is depleated the paint base will remain but the antifouling properties will be gone.
