Does anyone know if one can varnish over the teak interior once it has been oiled?

I Did.

I used a liquid sandpaper solvent first and scuffed the surface with a fine 3M pad. Worked great. Rick D.

Why not?

Bill: We do this with other types of furniture. I think the best think to do would be a good cleaning with something like Murphy Oil. This should lift most of the dirt and oil from the wood. Then a light sanding (be careful on the veneers). Wipe everything down with some mineral spirits and then start you coatings procedures. I personally like Interlux Jet Varnish to start 1-3 coats. Then finish it up with a couple of coats of Interlux Rubbed Effect Finish. Seems to be very durable and look great.

But why?

I realize this doesn't your question (which always irritates me) but why do it? My former H31 had been varnished when I bought her and I never really liked it. My current 37.5 has never been varnished and it's great. I use a little Daly's Seafin on the wood, which is oil with some varnish in it, wipe it on and it's good to go.

Thanks

Thanks guys, I had thought thst the teak oil might prevent the varnish from sticking...I'll take your advice...and Don, I just like the look.

Use something to reduce the first coat

You need to use something to reduce the first coat so it will really soak into the wood. If you oiled it awhile ago then you should not have any problems. I would not varnish the sole since it makes it very slippery (you will get a lot of debate about this but I just replaced the sole on my H34 - BIG JOB - because it had been varnished and rotted out.)
