varnish thinned with acetone?

Good news bad news.

The wife said she would put on the third coat of varnish Monday while I was at work. I had asked her to thin it about 10%. She told me last night that when she put the acetone in to thin the varnish it kind of softened up the plastic cup she was using. I don't know why she used acetone after I made a point on Saturday about needing the brand specific brushing thinner.

Anyway, what's the effect of having thinned the varnish with acetone? She said it looked fine.

Thanks

The acetone probably didn't hurt anything, it just may have caused the varnish to dry somewhat faster because of its relative volatility.

Brand specific thinner are, for the most part, just overpriced packaging for common products. I have typically used mineral spirits as a thinner with very high quality varnish with excellent results. The overall quality of the finish seems to depend more on the use of a really good badger hair brush, proper conditions, and practice.

Thanks. As far as practicing goes, no matter how much varnishing I do it will never be enough and at the same time always too much. Actually, I don't mind the varnishing, it's the prep that's a bear.

Anyone can slop on a coat of varnish/paint, but its the people that take the time and care to do proper prep work that ends up with a good looking long lasting finish...

Well I hope she won't be adding acetone instead of vermouth to my gin!

I would suggest, very gently, suggesting that she should read instructions on the container. Yup, I understand the wife politics. But there is no really good defense when you didn't read the instructions as a double check.

To which my wife would say, "it's your fault for not doing the job yourself, you're the man". There is no winning this argument, and frankly it ain't worth fighting about. The deed is done, and it didn't do any harm. You boys with women who do dirty boat work should count your blessings.

I've known Sue to cut the lawn while I'm doing boat work ... does that count? That's one of the reasons I cherish her!

There are blue jobs and pink jobs. I've screwed up a few pink jobs in my day and never been asked to do it again. I think that they are catching on.

Believe me I didn't complain about it. Just said I'm sure it will be fine ( but why did you use the acetone?).

I guess we need to redefine pink job?
Jaha! Touche! My wife and I can work side by side, each taking advice and learning from the other at the same time. She sees a bigger picture. I can get more done in a shorter time. I draw plans, consult her, fix my plans, and execute them! She draws plans, executes them, consults me, gets my agreement, and we move on! Haha.... something like that! God, how I love her. And I mean that!

Thanks,

Andrew

Hey Capta,

Nothing derogatory intended and in my situation that is definitely blue. It's great to see the ladies doing this type of work.

One suggestion though, it's a good idea to remove the rings from the fingers when working on the mechanical systems. My wedding ring was bent every which way to Sunday before I saw the light. Didn't loose a finger but I came close a couple of times.
