Now that I've spent the last three weeks trying to get my Hunter 30 from New Jersey to Upstate, NY by water (the canal is closed this week because of flooding) I have a few questions for other owners of this model boat. Some of these questions may be specific to my boat but I thought I would give it a try. 1. PAR pump. When on, the foot pump runs constantly. I have vice gripped the hose leading to it but this is obviously not the way to do this. Is there a valve to shut off the foot pump? Is the foot pump faulty? 2. Very sticky steering. What is involved in lessening the tension on the steering? 3. Diesel guage. Is there, in fact, a way to "see" how much fuel is left by peeking in the cockpit locker? 4. Port lights. I have a busted one in the hall opposite the head. Where is the best place to get a replacement? I only need the inside, is it possible to purchase just this? 5. Access panel at bottom of steps? Just aft the bilge, I can hear an access panel that has been carpeted over. What was this? 6. Someone installed a fan all the way in the back of the quarterberth. This fan runs constantly (even when I shut off the shore power and all power in the main panel). Could it be hard wired? Why? I'm sure more questions will come up the LONGER I have to wait for the canal to reopen. I have 24 locks behind me ... and only ONE to go! PS - Check out my travels on hunter30.com

Hello Eric, Sorry, I can't help with your other problems but my 1979 H30 does have a fuel guage on top of the fuel tank and it can be seen from the cockpit locker. But you'll have to stick your head into the locker a little bit to see it.

Portlights and steering.
My H37C is similar being a Cherubini and all. You should call Thrifty Mariner about the portlight, pretty sure you can purchase pieces/parts. See "Related Link". Steering problems are not so simple. The problem could be in the steering system or it could be in the rudder. The only right way to know is to disconnect the steering cable from the quandrant and use the emergency tiller. See if there is any binding or looseness. If yes then rudder bearing job is the answer. On my boat you get to the bottom of the pedestal through a hatch in the quarterberth. I keep the sheaves, the cable, the chain, all well oiled and tensioned. See the Edson site for a breakdown(www.edsonmarine.com).

Look forward to your updates. I installed a Tempo mechanical gauge on the fuel tank last year. There are several articles in the archives. just do a search for "fuel gauge". What kind of fan is it? Our new boat had a hella turbo and I couldn't figure out how to turn it on until I realized the switch was built into the front cap. I'd also check the entire route back to the panel as there may be a switch in a locker. Thrifty mariner has the best prices I've seen on portlites but I bought just the lens from Sailnet.com a couple years ago.

I have a '77 Hunter 30. There is a square panel just forward of the engine area, which allows access between the hull and the sole. Handy for routing bilge pump hoses.

I was on a boat last summer with a fan that the owner couldn't shut off. It was a solar-powered vent. It kept the aft berth cool and fresh. We installed a fused switch and he rarely uses it.

Ok, in a nutshell, here goes...
1.) Can't help you. Don't know what the hell your dealing with (and, I'm certainly not an expert). 2.) Very easy to adjust the stearing from the aft cockpit locker, IF, it is a Yacht Specialties Pedestal...just follow the cable aroung the quadrant to two nuts per side...one nut tightens, the other locks. Just tighten the nuts. 3.) Diesel guage...if you have no fuel guage on the boat, I would definitely install one...it's not so hard. Really! 4.) Port Lights. Check the archives, but, I believe these are Grey Portlights. Bomar used to own, now it's someone else. check recent postings...especially Cherubini Designs. 5.) I think this is access to your water/holding tank?? 6.) Definitely sounds like a solar vent. I don't do anything to mine and have had it for years(and for years, winter and summer it runs and runs). 7.) For what it's worth...good luck..it's a Cherubini...great boat!
