Various idle on my m-25 Universal

My m-25 diesel engine has an idle varies that I do not know why. The tachometer varies in step with the idle of the engine. What can cause this variation of the engine speed to idle. My alternator was inspected and my fuel filters are almost new. This looks like a gas landboy that needs adjusting !!! Is a simple adjustment screw of gas would be enough to solve the problem? Thank you for your advice!

I would speculate clogged or worn injectors or water in fuel. Have you drained water from your fuel separator lately?

You didn't say what your idle rpm is. Before you go tearing your hair out with the earlier suggestions (many of which could be very valid), first look at the idle position screw on the top of the starboard side of the engine. With the engine on, go down below and move the throttle lever itself. You may find your idle is too low and any small load on the alternator would cause it to happen. Many folks start with full batteries by having the boat plugged in all the time. Once a load, like a fridge, is turned on, the regulator tells the alternator to provide output, putting a small load on the engine. On my engine, I've been meaning to adjust that low idle stop screw for a few years now, 'cuz when I completely back off the throttle the engine stops!!! It's on my list. Idle should be at least 900 rpm. The transmission can take it all the way up to 1500, but I wouldn't go that high; 900 to 1200 would do just fine.

Try that first.

You need to learn about those stop screws. They have wire ties on them from the factory, but are made and put there for adjustment.

I think you're right Stu. I did test with full battery charged without load and the boat was plugged too. I'll test it next week end! Thank a lot!
