Varidian or VC off shore, any experience?

Well, I have to strip the bottom this year after all. So now what to put on. Anyone have any experience with Interlux Varidian? I like the fact that it is environmentally safer, and the slick silicon suface should reduce drag; but, I don't like the recommendation to sponge wash the bottom once a month. Do you really need to sponge the bottom, or does the slick suface keep growth off? How about VC offshore?

When I was racing, vc17offshore was the best paint i ever used both in longevity and a smooth bottom.

VC Offshore

I just finished redoing my hull with VC17. This is my second VC17 job and it has worked great. However, I keep my boat in fresh water. VC Offshore is the saltwater formula. It has more copper than VC17 and it's vinyl based instead of Teflon. It's my understanding that both paints work the same way, i.e. you get a smooth, low-friction finish, but you lose some antifouling capability in the process. A word of warning...VC paints dry VERY quickly, especially if the weather is warm. Someone had suggested putting the paint in an empty plastic ketchup bottle (44 oz) and squeezing the paint onto the roller as needed. It works! If you use VC Tar as the primer/barrier coat, be careful. It sets up so fast you need someone to follow IMMEDIATELY behind the roller with a brush to tip the paint. Otherwise it dries like orange peel and you have to sand most of it off just to get it smooth again. If you get it right, VC Tar fills the little dings and sets up to give such a hard, slick, glossy black surface you won't want to cover it with the VC17. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"
