Vanity sink again.

Does it seem to you that posts roll off of this forum sooner than the others? Seems that we just had the vanity sink thread going but it is already in the archives.Anyway I made a startling discovery today. Most of you H37C owners probably already knew this. When I took the teak trim off from the front of the vanity sink there was NO separation. In other words the sink is molded as part of the inner liner! You can see a ragged edge on the left. At the front and on the right you see a continuation of the fiberglass, right down to the bottom of the boat.The shelf behind the mirror is the same piece of fiberglass as the sink top. And I thought I was going to take home the sink today! Now what?I think that I am going to cut away part of the bowl and just set something right over it. That something could be 1/4" plywood covered with Formica with a drop in bowl. Or I could get a marble-like countertop, either with a drop in bowl or a molded one. But I am not going to try to repair this one.

That is what I would do.

Ed:That is what I would do. Just cut out the entire top, leaving about 2" of fiberglass all the way around. Then put on a piece of plywood. Then you replace the entire top with something like granite, Corian or one of the other new materials. To attach the solid surface materials, you will just need liquid nails. If you use something like granite, you will want to be sure that you underlayment (plywood) is about 5/8". There are plenty of S.S. sinks that you can order from any plumbing shop. You can also get a very nice faucet from Home Depot or Lowes to finish it off.Looking for forward to your finished product.

Vanity Sink

Wow..DIn't realize this was all one assy...Well, cutting it and having a custom top and sink made is certainly an option..I would check on local cultured marble places in your area....They could make it to extend close enough where the original trim bits would go back in without too much adjustment...I would also make sure that whatever you do, make sure that whatever faucet set you decide on will extend all the way through for hookup..I would look for delta or whatever makes the Admiral happy..My critiera for fixtures are now not what WM or Defender has, but what I can get repair parts for...Looking forward to your solution!Ed S/V MYST

just kidding, but my 33 has the same sink in it also. What is wrong with your sink that you need to replace it? The idea of cutting it out really concerns me, I mean, that is gelcoat covering the existing one, seems it would be easier to make repairs to current sink. What do think about just making repairs to fiberglass and re-gel coating the entire sink?david

Speaking of screwdrivers etc lost overboard...

After I lost enough tools overboard, I finally figured out a way to prevent it: I drilled holes the handles of all my hand tools and put leather lanyards on all of em to go around my wrist when using 'em. Just wanted to share that idea...I now return you to the topic at hand.

Current thinking.

Which screwdriver is yours David, there are four in the picture? Lanyards are a good idea and there is one on the high priced drill.My current plan for the vanity is 1/4" or 3/8" plywood with a Formica top. A hole will be cut to drop in a bowl in similar size and shape to the current one. Also offset aft to provide some working room. Still have to decide between stainless and porcelain.I only plan to cut out enough for the new bowl and room for the faucet assembly. I really don't think that I can get a professional look with paint or gelcoat. The problem is lots of stains and spider cracks, especially around the drain.Note that you have to use a low profile faucet assembly. Otherwise the door will not open. I could leave it alone and it would probably work for another 25 years.

Things to do with the sink!

Hey Ed. Long time! I plan to build some drawers in where the vanity sink is. For me and the mate, that is a huge waste of space. Since we are preparing for our 2006 send-off I'm getting more concerned with where to store things.While on the subject, we tore out that monster salon table and replaced it with a folding one that stores out of the way. Also built a box that is monted in front of the starboard settee which extendes the whole settee out about 12 inches. This gives me a 12 by 15 by 72 inch box for storage below the waterline and allows me to bring the back of the settee cushion out an equal amount (for more storage of lighter weighed items). I've increased my storage area by 15 cubic ft. Also, by doing this I can use the seat backs to fill in the distance between the two settees to form a large bed for times in port. I'll get some pictures up as soon as it's completed. I have some rough shots now, but don't want anyone to see my mistakes...ha! Ron

Ed, unless you're having fun doing demolition--in which case ignore the following--why not sand out the spider-webbed cracks, fill it with epoxy, sand down again, another layer epoxy, another sanding, until your happy, and then paint? I think you just want to go to town with a sawz-all, sledge-hammer and some crow bars, which I fully understand.Josh

Or is it step two? Anyway I went to Lowes today. One sink, $58., and one piece of plywood, five bucks. The sink came complete with faucet and drain assemblies. But the vanity mirror/door will not clear that faucet. I could use the high neck if I turned the sink sideways. But I think I will buy a low profile model. Lowes only sells Formica in large sheets. I will have to find some scraps somewhere.Nice sunny day in Canton. I think it hit 30. I would always rather make the sawdust outside if possible.

ED while you have the chance why dont you epoxy coat all that wood so you wont every have to fool with the plywood again. easy now!At least do the sides and bottom.
