Has anyone installed a Garhauer boomvang on a Hunter 37 cutter? If so, which size etc. please. How far along the boom did you attach it and how has it worked out? I figure if I can get rid of the topping lift I can gain a reef point inside the boom.

Contact Garhauer. They will size it for you and custom bend any mast/boom fittings. Their products have a 10 yr warranty. If you expect them to honor the warranty, then you need to have the vang that they size for your vessel that they recommend.

Remove topping lift?
Are you sure you want to depend upon the Garhauer to hold your boom up? There have been threads here in the past about the problem of flaking and covering the main without a topping lift. The vang cannot hold the weight if you have to lean on it for whatever reason, like when you hit that unexpected wake. You should ask the manufacturer about the safety aspect. And I don't understand how you will gain a reef point. Do you have four internal boom sheaves? My H37c has three, two for reefing and one for the outhaul. I have a Garhauer rope vang. I like it because it easily doubles as a preventer for those fun wing-on-wing runs. I attached my spare halyard to the topping lift. Right now it adjusts at the mast. One of these days I will run it back.

You are right again, Ed. My last boat, a Mac 64, had a hydraulic vang and a topping lift. Adding weight to the boom for flaking and the rocking of the waves would make the boom rise, fall and swing. Perhaps removal is not such a good idea. My current boom rig is an outhaul, 1 reef and a topping lift. I guess the topping lift should be run like a spare halliard instead of being dead ended at the mast truck.

I have to admit, Richard's picture makes me think how nice it would be to not have that topping lift while sailing. How many times have we all had the roach hang up on a light wind tack? Picture is a keeper, added it to my H37C picture file. So what is the procedure? Douse the main first and then attach the spare halyard? Or vice versa? Richard, looks like you still run the staysail sheet the original way. Does it still go forward and then off to the toerail and back? I moved mine to the cabin top with a standup block at the mast and then through a deck organizer and back to the original port mainsheet winch. And are all of your deck organizers and standup blocks thru-bolted? I am using standard blocks on eye bolts(with shoulders) replacing the mast partner bolts.

Yes, douse the main first and then attach the halyard to the end of the boom. The boom swing is minimal if the main sheet is loaded down against the rigid boom vang and gone once the halyard is attached and tighten. The sheet set-up for the stay-sail is still forward and then off to the toe-rail and back. Yes, all of the deck organizers and stand-up blocks are thru-bolted. I have also replaced, since those pictures, the old blocks at the mast with new Garhauer stand-up blocks.
