SJS (MD): In a previous message I said that the advantage of this forum is that it is like walking into a room where a number of excellent sail trimers are available to answer your questions. Yesterday, Alan (NY) was sitting at the boom vang desk and he provided the answer to your question!! In the beginning of my sail trim experience I was very confused with all the sail trim controls for the main and jib. What helped me understand them was to visualize what is actually happening to the main or jib when I crank on these sail trim controls. For example, when I crank on the outhaul I'm stretching the foot of the sail. If I crank on the halyard or cunningham, I stretching the luff of the sail. If I crank on the vang, I'm pulling down the entire shape of the sail. It is obviously very important to know what each sail trim control for the main and jib does. To that end I provide a "quick reference" sheet with my Sail Trim Charts. This sheet takes the confusion out of which sail trim control to use.
