vang mod

I just did a mod to our vang. I turned it upside down, turned the cam cleat around so the line could run free. Now the the line runs down to a block on the mast rail and back to the cockpit. I had an unused jam cleat in my junk box and installed that beside the line stoppers.
Easy mod to do. I usually release it when I furl the sail so now I don't have to go forward to do that.

I have plans this season to make my vang more useful and your idea fits nicely into those plans. Another thing I plan to do is move the vang-to-boom attachment aft a few inches in order to be able to tighten the main leech. Right now, the vang is fully pulled in thereby preventing any further adjustment. At any point, did you run up against this problem?

Nice modification, but there is one thing you should reconsider.
Mast base block is of the center line a few inches maybe 4”… and this will put uneven load into your line when you tack from starboard to port etc.Place block on the centerline with mast and you will be perfect…you have there unused mast base eye.

Doug, I have not had that problem. You need to watch you do not get too close to the block on the traveller. Mine is pretty close now. Steve Pettengill moved the stop for the out haul away from the mast so it is over top of the attachment point for the rod kicker. The result is a better angle to deploy the sail, it pulls it out more evenly. He said the dealers were supposed to make that adjustment when boat was commissioned but many did not.
