gonna install a rope vang on my 1981 33, I know the rule of thumb is the vang should make a 45 degree angle from the mast base to the boom, just wondering if there are 33 owners who have done this & have some practical advice. . . appreciate any feedback, Pat Greene

Put a vang on some years ago. One of the best improvements I have made to the sail handling of the boat. Suggest the addition of plastic or rubber washers between any stainless steel attachments and the aluminum mast or boom. This will reduce corrosion from dissimilar metals.

Measured the distance from the mast to the vang attached to the boom. It is 42 inches. The distance from the boom to the vang attachment on the mast is a little over 30 inches. This is not a 45 degree angle but it works well. The Hunter 33's boom is attached low on the mast. There is a boom track on the boats mast that allows the boom some room to move up and down. I keep mine low as the main sail needs the added length. Good Luck you will enjoy the added sail control that a vang gives you.

Thanks Paul. . . my boom is about 37" from the top of the mast base, that's the way the boat was set up when I bought it. . . I never thought about lowering the boom, seems like it would be a good thing, might make the main halyard more efficient . . .
