OK...I am pretty convinced I will put a rigid vang (Garhauer) or Boomkicker instead of a topping lift on my 1987 H23. Next: Which to install? Also: Should I install it before stepping the mast or when the mast is in place? TIA, Richard H23 "Invictus"

Mast in place

You will need to know exactly where to place it on the boom and mast for the correct lift of the boom. Just use your topping lift to put the boom where it's desired and place the vang to hold it in that position.

Thanks...also?

Thanks. I was thinking to install on an upright mast. I currently have no toppng lift, so should I measure with the main halyard holding the boom? In your opinion Garhauer rigid vang or Boomkiccker? Richard

Garhauer

I installed a rigid vang 2 years ago on my 98 H240. Took about 1 hour to drill and tap holes on mast and boom. I am very impressed with there products. Makes making vang adjustments while the sail is under load a snap. My 11 year old son who races with me makes all the vang adjustments without a problem. I would go with the vang instead of the boom kicker. The stock vang is not very usefull. Sean Coerse 1998 Hunter 240 "Right Coerse"

Garhauer again...

Love it! I have it on my H260. One thing to save potential grief when installing. BEFORE raising the mast, pin the mast base in position but before raising, take the Garhauer vang lower bracket that attaches to the mast and mark the lowest position on the mast that provides no interference with the deck, hatch or whatever else might be there. I've heard of some cases where the thing is installed with the mast up and the first time the mast is brought back down there is interference between the bracket and deck parts. Fair winds, Tom

Mine is the BoomKicker

Either will work fine. Doesn't matter if you don't have a topping lift. Just something (or someone) to hold boom in position while you attach.
