Vang block

Hi,

mum replacing all the lines on my 23.5. I’ve hit a little bit of a snag. The end of the line has a splice (both new and old) but I’m not sure how to remove or put the new line on without cutting the splice which is not what I would like to do.

Any ideas?? Many thanks

PS would prefer not to buy a new part if I can help it.

The stud/pin holding the splice onto the block should be removable.

Cut the old one off. Use a shackle for the new one.
But something is wrong there. Is the block upside down? Maybe the shackle at the top of the picture should retain the splice, and another shackle should anchor the block - like for a mainsheet attached to a traveler or deck strap.
The line appears to be too thick for that block.

By golly, you're right. I looked too briefly at the photo. The splice should connect at the bottom of the block which is at the top of the picture, with the removable pin I mentioned. The top (bottom of photo) gets the shackle or a connection to the bottom of the boom. Thx, shemandr.

Sometimes small boat owners install vangs upside down so the cam cleat end is closer to the cockpit instead of running a line aft along the coach roof.

Looks like a Schaefer 25-53 fiddle block. See the link. Looks like they tied it on. So, tie it on, perhaps smaller diameter line. or learn to splice.

Fiddle Block with V-Jam and Becket 25-53 [25-53] - $102.20 : Schaefer Marine, Inc.

I think you have it properly oriented but the line was spliced on rather than tied.

From the Schaefer Catalog, common specs for the 2-Series blocks:

Sheave Diameter: 1-1/16" (27mm)
Sheave Width: 3/8" (9mm)
Maximum Line Diameter: 5/16" (8mm)
Pin Diameter: 3/16" (5mm)
SWL Stainless: 900 lbs (410kg)
SWL Ball Bearing: 500 lbs (225 kg)

I’ll post another photo tomorrow. I quickly took the two photos as I had to pack up and start cooking dinner. The vang to my knowledge is actually threaded correctly. The lines that go out the top of the photo are only there cause I was in a rush. The pin to my knowledge isn’t able to be removed. This is the first time I’m looking at the vang. I have the new line to feed through which I got from the store on here so I’m sure it’s the correct size.
Will re read the comments later tonight.
Thanks for the replies

I just sailed on a Flying Scot which had a similar block with the vee jammer. What a PITA! I had to free the line from the vee multiple times to get the main up all the way. It didn't help that the vang was rigged so that there wasn't enough length of the tail to let the vang be completely slack. During the whole sail the vang was bending the boom and I couldn't release it any more. I'll start another thread on the FS story. But don't call me a fan of the vee jammer.

Me too. Those things are a PITA and were replaced on anything I had that had one.
