One thing that has never worked well for me is the way the vang is attached to the mast foot via a ss plate and shackle. The system would work great in a perfect world but I have bent much stainless and gouged ounces of aluminum over the years. Time for me to abandon the factory set-up. What has worked for you? TIA Matt from SW Florida

When we bought our boat years ago our dealer warned that the vang attachment was unsatisfactory and sent along a 10 inch cable extension that we shackle to the plate at he base of the mast and just leave there, then shackle the vang to the extended end when we set up. I believe he made these in his shop as it needs to be well made (ie loop ends well crimped) as vang can take a fair load.

My 77 Hunter 27' doesn't have a boom vang and I'm getting ready to install one. I have most of the parts I need to build an 8:1 vang (4:1 inside a 2:1 doubler) but have been struggling to find the right part to attach the vang to the mast. What have you used in the past that did NOT work successfully? I've been looking at various padeyes and boom bails, but I'm not sure they'll be OK. I've also looked at the swivel mounts that they use for hydraulic vangs, but I'm reluctant to spend $100 just on the vang attachment point.

Vang Brackets

Doug, you might want to call Garhauer Marine (909-985-9993). They sold me a high quality rigid vang complete with custom made SS boom and mast brackets for $215. They have you use solder wire to trace your spar profiles onto a piece of paper, then fax it to them. They might be willing to make just the brackets for you, or you might consider the whole shootin' match (hard to find a non-rigid vang for 200 bucks!)

Over the summer I was looking at various vang attachments on h23s and seems to me the besst set up is a simple bail thru bolted thru the mast, it means drilling a hole, but would hold up , some were rivited, good Luck Mike B

Vang parts

I want my vang to do double duty as a preventer, so I can't use a rigid vang. I've added up the cost for all the parts: fiddle, fiddle w/becket, single block, boom bail, Vectran line for the doubler, Sta-Set line for the 4:1, triangle plate to connect 2:1 and 4:1 to common point, snap shackle from triangle plate to mast fitting, nuts, bolts, fairleads and v-cleat to run it all aft to the cockpit. I'll splice my own eyes. It all comes to $217.51 if I buy it from West Marine. The packaged soft vangs are over $200 and are only 4:1, have an integral cam cleat, which I don't want, and don't come with boom or mast fittings. So... all I need is a good, solid mast fitting. Still looking for ideas...
