Vang anchor point

C22 Owners: What's the ideal vang anchor point on the boom? I'm looking for distance from the mast to the anchor point (hound) give or take an inch? The boat didn't come from the factory with a vang and the PO never rigged a vang either.

Good question

Ole: I have wondered the same thing. Mine is 51" but some others that I have seen are less than mine. Bob B.

vang

I was always told the anchor point should be at a 45* angle to the mast plate. The vang on my boat was already installed when I bought it, after looking at it though it is at a 45* angle to the mast plate, its mounted 34" from the forward end of the boom (that's just the boom) not the goose neck, from the vang eye strap to the mast its 36". I've found that attaching the fiddle with the cam to the boom makes adjusting the vang easier.

My vang anchor point is free to swivel

at the homemade mast plate. When I bought the boat, it had a mid boom sheeting tang at 51" from the mast. I am using that old sheeting tang now for the vang & gone back to end of boom sheeting. Should my vang tang be closer to the mast. Confusing or what?? Bob B.

Thanks everyone!

Just about everyone that's responded to my question agrees with your comments. I just wanted a consenus before I started drilling holes.

vang bail

I would say yes, and move it to 36" from the mast. There is another reason if you ever want to use a binimi top you going to run into trouble. one can use a 72" binimi top with the vang at the position. Ever one I have seen seems to be at the 45* which is at 36" from the mast. That said if its works for you and you don't have any problems ...

Well, 51" does work

for me, with no problems & when single handing it easy to reach for adjustment. On the other hand, now that I have end of boom sheeting, the vang bail at 36" would make for a more balanced down force on the boom. The 51" location is closer to half way along the boom. I will change it. Thanks to all. Merry Christmas & a happy New Sailing Year. Bob B.

30 Degree Angle to the Boom

From what I've read, the optimum angle for a vang is 30 degrees measured from vang to the boom (60 degrees measured to the mast). There was quite an extensive article on this in Latitude 38, a San Francisco-based monthly sailing publication, a few years back. I don't remember the details but the article was complete with a lot of geometry and physics. Based on other things I've read, some say 45 degrees. The angle isn't that critical, so if the geometry of your boat doesn't allow for 30 degrees, get as close as you can. By the way, at 30 degrees, the distance from the mast to the mounting point on the boom will be twice the distance from the boom to the mounting point at the base of the mast.

Geometry is not my strong suit!!

Bob. Let me get this straight now. If the vang is at 30 degrees to the boom, it would be pulling more towards the mast than down. Using this set up, my vang bail on the boom would be about 72" from the mast?? Regards, Bob B. Seems
