We are bringing our Catalina 42' from BC to SF in early August. Anyone done the trip that time of year and have suggestions, etc.

I haven't but...

...it's the right time of year to go. Just make sure you've got a north wind behind you!

Someone just ask a similar question for the same month recently (< 1 month). I've done Seattle to SF (or San Diego) in June & September. Both times we had strong southerlies off the Oregon Coast. Keep a close on eye on the weather. August has the best odds. If the weather forecast says 30 knots expect to see 40 knots at times. My first trip was on Catalina 36. It was fine. Check your rudder post. I just read a Catalina 42 sailing from Mexico to Hawaii lost their rudder 50 miles from Hawaii. They didn't hit anything. Maybe a call to Catalina is warranted. The 42 was named Moonspun. They have a nice website and have done a lot of "improvements" to their 42.
