My 1983 hunter34 is leaking water under the icebox area while under sail. Should I close the valve under the sink when under sail????

Rschipam,
The ice box drains into the main bilge not under the sink area.
The seacock located under the sink is solely to drain sink. If you are getting water under the sink then the seacock thruhull needs to be rebed or replaced asap! If you are getting water under the sink then you need to locate the source of the water. No need to close the seacock when you are sailing however I would close it when you leave the boat.

I’m getting wet wood underneath the stove area while under way. Im new to sailing I’ve only had boat less than a yr. the valve under the sink is open. I thought maybe the water could be coming from there

This only happens when sailing? When heeled to starboard? Maybe water in the bilge is coming up?

It could be a leaky sink through-hull, but that doesn't explain why it only happens when sailing. Bilge water can move from the main bilge area when the boat is heeled over up through the holes that are meant to drain upper areas of the boat. This could be what you are seeing under the sink.

Welcome aboard!

You have a great boat. I am an original owner 1983 h34 as well.

Highly unlikely to be comming from the sink. Check under the stove and pull the bottom draw from the galley and see if PO installed a raw water pump for the sink. That was a common area to install a thruhull to supply the water to for it.

Most likely coming from your bilge hose.
If you are getting water under the stove area check your main bilge hose. Hunter ran the bilge hose under the sink floor and then behind the stove cabinet leading to the starboard lazarette where it discharges. If it's the original hose it should be approximately
1-1/4 corrugated white fex hose. It may have started to split due to age. When you are sailing the bilge pump may come on and be leaking from there. Also the hose could be getting some abrasions from the back of the stove cabinet. Mine did and caused a leak that drove me crazy for weeks until I found it.

The starboard side of a 34 is the recipient of water from a lot of sources because of the listing to starboard that is natural. Could be from rainwater following many different paths, could be from bilge pump out hose- especially if it got frozen- this hose always has water in it if yu have a back flow valve on it, could be from bilge ( or under bilge), could be from under floor under table, could be from fridge drain. I did have to replace my thru hull under the sink because water was seeping around the fitting. The originals are not the best thru hulls.

Not that familiar with the H34, but on our boat the galley sink has a dedicated below the waterline through hull, which I keep closed when off the boat. Both head sinks have through hulls above the water line and I normally keep them open unless under sail. On a port tack in moderate to heavy wind the boat heel will place these through hulls under water, in which case the sink will fill with sea water.

The water you find is probably from the packing on your drive shaft, the weep holes from the hull supports and the bilge are small and possibly got clogged, try and remove the table support post where it fastens to the sole, you will probably find sea water in that area. On my 34 I keep a battery operated fuel transfer pump on board to quickly dry that area. Also I agree, your bilge pump hose may have a leak from age and wear!
