Hi Folks - I just got done doing a valve adjustment on my Volvo 2002 (lives in the belly of my 32s5). Thought I'd post this here in case any of you were thinking about doing this yourself. Not too difficult - all it takes is a basic set of tools and a feeler guage - and of course a service manual. If you have questions, just post here and I'll answer as best I can. Rob

Volvo 2002 TDC - valve adjustment

Good question Dirk. The service manual describes how to do it. It says to to rotate the engine (I did this w/a socket wrench attached to the bolt on crank's pulley) until the valves just start "rocking." At that point, rotate the engine another full rev and you'll be at TDC. I marked the pulley, but to be honest, the valve movement didnt' really coincide w/the pulley 100%. I felt it out by watching the valves and rougly figuring the TDC position. It's pretty clear when they are both closed, and that's when you take the measurement. Wish I had a better answer, but the manual is not the best in the world, and you really need to budget a nice chunk of time to just sit and observe the engine as you pull it though. By the way - don't forget to put the decompression lever back to its running position when you adjust the valves. It's easy to forget that it's open and when it is, you won't get a good measurement, or won't be able to adjust some of the valves at all. After adjustment, I found that the tiny, telltale fuel slick I'd see on the water was gone, so I believe the valves are fully closing now and I am getting better combustion. Best of luck - feel free to post back w/any other questions . Rob
