Value of raw water pressure warning

Comments appreciated. I'm considering adding a water pressure switch at the outlet of the raw water pump. My desire is to be warned if pump fails, inlet clogs or lack of water flow before the engine over temp light comes on. Would slightly less than 15 psi be the normal water pressure on a Universal M-XP25 with a heat exchanger. Another option is a flow switch. know a P/n? Thanks

On my Yanmar you can hear when the sound of the exhaust changes to sound like a motorcycle. Seems like a lot of complication and another float switch to go bad.

The pressure switch at the outlet of the sea water pump wouldn't tell you anything if you have an obstruction downstream of the sensor i.e. the infamous plugged mixing elbow :cussing:.
Had an Aqualarm flow switch in place for several years without any problems.

Both of these options are fine if they identify the problem area but nothing beats a temperature gauge, alarm and an owner's familiarity with and attention to their engine operation. Exhaust noise and flow are also aids to be constantly monitored by the operator.

Temp Gauge

I would add a temp gauge for the engine and if you see or here some thing is wrong that would be a good warning to see the temp gauge is rising or alarm.

I agree with the posters who said about listening for the sound of a motorcycle out the tail. I've thought of it more like the sound of an airplane but the concept is the same. I've heard it and it occurred long before the temp alarm goes off so you certainly get good warning! It's simple and fool proof!

I just installed a temperature gauge on my boat. It has a Yanmar 3GM30F. Seems to work well and may give me an early warning of problem before anything is damaged or the motor shuts down going through a cut.

How about some photo's where you installed the temp sending unit and which sending unit you used with info #.
I have 3YM30 and did try adding temp gauge but not working and put the sending unit into tee in engine hoses.
I did this with my old 2GM20 and worked great but not with my 3YM so far and just working on other things.

Re: Bob

Thanks all, I very much appreciate you taking the time to share your comments. I already have a temp gauge, but based on your suggestiins I'll pay more attention to the exhaust sound. I like the early warning a flow meter can provide, so thanks Ralph, I'll look into adding a flw sensor and report back.
Thanks again.

Nick, I followed the same route as the others, I installed it in the hot water tank supply line. I bought the VDO gauge and sender unit together from Defender so they were matched. The sender is in a plumbing T from Homedepot. Because it is mounted in a rubber hose the T has a ground wire going up to bolt on the thermostat housing. The picture below show it all, if you have any questions let me know.

Regards, Bob

Here are the details of the sender unit. With an ipad this site only allows one picture to show in a post ?

Thanks @Donnybrook just finished installing one. Very very easy. Nice kit for not much money

I installed a similar exhaust temperature alarm. It was super easy; just attach the band sensor around the exhaust hose downstream of the mixing elbow, connect power from engine panel ignition ON.

Nothing to turn on (and forget), a green indicator light to tell you it's operating. I mounted the little panel with the red warning light and audible alarm in the companionway where it's easily seen and heard.

I really appreciated it during a long cruise this year when motoring for long hours was the norm. With crew onboard it was nice sleeping below knowing; engine oil pressure - engine coolant temperature and exhaust temperature alarms were standing watch on these systems that are hard to keep tabs on during the long night.

I did install a temp gauge with tee near thermostat and been on a few years now and it works great and once was motoring a lot for long hours and decided to push faster and the gauge started rising higher temp and new some thing was wrong and did change the raw water hose
to pump from intake strainer and now temp is steady at around 180 all the time.
Love the temp gauge at the helm next to RPM gauge and great warning when some thing wrong.
