Hunter 37 cutter Michigan City, Indiana
I need help! My brother and I shared ownership of a 1980 Hunter 37 Cutter on Lake Michigan. My brother was the primary user of the boat and I live about 700 miles away from it. My brother passed away recently and I have no choice, but to sell the boat that I grew up on. I have no idea how to figure out the value of this boat. Can anyone direct me as to how to go about setting a basic price? My primary goal at the moment is to be able to settle my brother's estate and a basic value of the boat is necessary.

My opinion is $35,000 if fair shape, no big ubgrades, original engine, 10 year old sails, that kind of thing.

Check here, above site for YachtWorld, there are 3 from $30,000- $40,000. You'll need to do some internet work to investigate. You might even Google the tear and model of boat and see what you find. I'd list it for sale on THIS website (Hunter Owners.com) first, but you can't just list it in the "forums". Go to "Classified Ads" tab at the top of the main page and go down to "sell your boat" and they'll help walk you through it. Usually there would be some other 37 cutters for sale here, but not now. Gonna need some pictures and as much info. as possible about the boat. Otherwise, you'll have to use a broker who will take 10% or more off the top.

Here's another one...found it just Googling... there are others. You'll really need to do a lot of reading to educate yourself to maximize what you can get out of the boat. Otherwise, figure out a minimum you'd take and wing it out there. It's a TOUGH market out there right now.

Another thing you could do is go ahead and pay for a marine survey, by a qualified surveyor in the area. That will establish a reasonable market value and any buyer will want to have one done before purchase anyway. You could negotiate with the buyer to pay a portion of the survey cost probably.

Re: Need to sell 1980 Hunter 37 Cutter

Hire a Broker near the boat. You don't want to be going 700 miles to show the boat, do sea trials or surveys. Brokers have access to selling prices. He (or she) will tell you what you can expect and will handle the closing and all that. All for 10%. All of the above remarks are about "asking" There is a 37 C on this web site that the guy is asking $65,000 for. Fat Chance!! You need to know what these boats bring in order to price it correctly and to know when to hold, when to fold.

It is in basically good shape, but needs some fiberglass repair.
After determining the value of the boat you will need to figure out what the fiberglass repair will cost and basically either deduct it from the asking price/value or pay for the repair upfront and hope you recoup the value of the repair job in the selling price. You could always have the boat surveyed for a value/sale appraisal.

Have you sold it het, I might be interested.
It is still for sale in St. Joesph, Michigan. I think it is listed for around $20,000. Michigan City Sailboat Charters is selling it for me.
