@G Man recently started a conversation on being asked to prove you carry sufficient insurance to gain access to certain areas of boating.

This raised the question in my mind of: how many people pay for insurance but DO NOT HAVE insurance due to not having proof of competency. In Canada we are required (please, no laughing) to have a federal government Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC) as minimum proof of competency.

From what I understand of articles I've read here on SBO, proof of competency in the US is a state matter.

I am not at all interested in whether you have, or do not have, proof of competency but only if you have this red outlined clause in your insurance policy:

Thanks for your response(s).

Here in Oregon, the Oregon State Marine Board issues.

It essentially means you passed the test and permits you to operate a motor powered vessel greater than 10hp.

Geico Marine asked me questions about my boating expereince during the underwriting process. I sent them my OBEC and said I have "X" number of years boating experience. I guess it was enough information. They issued the policy and took my premium payment. Does this mean I bought influence?

No, but the Geico Agent was under the Influence of an Adult beverage.:cowbell:

Boating Competency Proof is same as buying a beer during New Orleans Mardi Gras...

I'd bet that sort of statement is standard boilerplate on all policies and is buried in the 37 pages of stuff that is and is not covered that is rarely read by anyone.

Along with stuff like you are not covered for commercial carriage, sailing to Borneo, Sea monsters or terrorist attacks.

Boater safety course is required by law in Virginia.
All PWC operators age 14 and older and all operators (regardless of age) of motorboats with a 10 hp or greater engine need to take a boating safety course. Once you complete the course, the course completion certificate or card that is provided by the course provider is what is required to operate a vessel.

My marina requires insurance and to be named on the policy. Many of my extended sailing friends and family are reporting that the insurance has always been required is now being enforced.

As jssailem noted, Oregon requires a Boater Education Card. Interestingly, Washington state does also but only for those born in 1955 and later.
