V Berth storage recess

I am a new owner of a Hunter 260. What is the purpose of the recessed storage compartment in the V berth area approximately straight below the anchor locker?

My h26 has a recessed area for storage of the cockpit table.

No cockpit table on 260

The cockpit table was eliminated on the H260, but the recessed area was left under the V-berth.

Interesting and thanks for your aide in solving my mystery. Now the next question is although the cockpit table was eliminated, is it possible to acquire one that will fit the recess and also fit in the cockpit? Hogan
