UV treated - BS or not?

OK the sails are clean, but I'm wondering about the longevity of the Doyle UV treated jib, which is on roller-furling. Is the UV treatment really good enough? Should I spray on some 303 - what flavor? Maybe pull a spinnaker sock over it? I live in Denver so the summer UV dosage is brutal.

Just did mine

Tore out the clew on the jib of my 1997 H26 in September. Asked the sail loft to take a look at the UV protective layer on the jib during the repair. They said I could probably get another season out of it, but I decided to have them add Sunbrella fabric to the luff since the sail was in for work anyway. On my five year old sail they said that the UV coating on the protective panel was already gone. Problem is that the UV will go thru the unprotected panel and damage the sail. This could result in the jib being ruined even though the protective layer isn't showing much visible damage. I doubt NJ has nearly the UV levels you do in Denver. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

Mike, I was really concerned about the same problem. Rather than worry, I purchased a furling jib sock, Item #E1703 for $225.00 from "Catalina Direct". I have a feeling it's a furling jib sock they make for the Catalina 25 but it fits perfectly on my H260. You just hoist it up (while holding the zipper) the furled jib using the jib halyard, which you don't use any way cause you have a roller furled jib. They have a good picture of it on their web site. Good luck, Bob.

According to our sources

The UV cover on the Doyle furling jib is more effective than a wrap of dark Sunbrella. But, more protection can never hurt. ph.

Jury still out on this one

Usually, I give something new 7 years. So far I have not seen anything going wrong but the jury is still out on this. For the record, it is a differnt material impregnated with UVB inhibitors so the coating is not on top of the sail but throughout. Cra zy Dave Condon
